- Confirm your likely date and ask removals firms to visit or complete a detailed video survey.
- Measure large furniture and the rooms, doorways and stair turns in the new home.
- Start with lofts, garages, playrooms and spare rooms. These hold the things most likely to be moved without being wanted.
- Create a simple inventory for items going with you, into storage, to charity or for sale.
- Book professional help early if you want support with decluttering, storage planning or unpacking.

Two weeks before
- Redirect your post and start the full address-change list.
- Use up freezer food and safely dispose of out-of-date food rather than packing it.
- Photograph valuable items and the cable layout behind televisions and desks.
- Prepare a moving-night bag and clean bedding as if the family were staying in a hotel for one night.
- Label each box with its destination room and a short description of the contents.
Moving day and the first week
Keep keys, documents, medication, chargers, children's comfort items and pet supplies with you. At the new home, get beds, bathrooms and the kitchen working before decorative rooms.
