Pack familiarity separately
Keep favourite bedding, soft toys, bedtime books, night-lights and comfort items together in a clearly marked box that travels where you can reach it. Setting out their own things makes an unfamiliar room feel like theirs much more quickly.
Set up children's rooms early
Build beds, hang curtains or blinds and put lamps in place before opening decorative boxes elsewhere. A calm bedroom gives children somewhere safe to retreat while adults and movers continue working.
Keep the bedtime routine recognisable
Use the same pyjamas, story, music and order of events if you can. Expect excitement, worry or disrupted sleep. A familiar routine communicates that family life is continuing even though the surroundings have changed.
Give children the right amount of choice
- Young children can choose which toys sit by the bed or where a favourite picture goes.
- Older children may want to plan shelves, desk space or wardrobe sections.
- Avoid asking them to make dozens of decisions when they are already tired.
- Keep promises specific, such as showing them where a treasured box will travel.
Let the rest of the house catch up
Once bedrooms, bathrooms and the kitchen work, everyone has the basics they need. Our moving day unpacking service prioritises those rooms and can set out children's belongings before they arrive home.
