Measure before making decisions
Get accurate room, doorway, lift and storage measurements for the new home. Mark furniture footprints on a floor plan. Large pieces that overwhelm a room, block a route or cannot pass through the door need a new home before removal day.
Start with the largest pieces
Deciding what happens to wardrobes, sofas, dining tables and spare beds creates space and clarity quickly. Offer wanted pieces to family with a firm collection date, contact suitable charities or arrange responsible removal. Do not pay to move furniture that cannot fit.
Give sentimental things their own process
Do not begin with photographs and family papers. Gather them safely, then return when easier categories are complete. Keep the best examples, share items deliberately and photograph objects where the memory matters more than the object itself. Nobody else should decide what is meaningful for you.
Use the limits of the new home
- Choose the amount of clothing that fits the available wardrobe space.
- Keep the kitchen equipment used for the way you cook now.
- Digitise suitable paperwork, but retain originals where legally or personally important.
- Avoid solving every difficult decision with paid storage and no end date.
