Start with the new home, not the old clutter
Look at the rooms, measurements and storage in the new property. How many wardrobes are there? Will the dining table fit? Is there a garage, loft or utility room? Clear limits make decisions easier because you are choosing for a real space rather than tidying in the abstract.
A simple four-way decision
- Keep: it is used, loved, needed or has a definite place in the new home.
- Sell: it has meaningful resale value and there is enough time to photograph, list and arrange collection.
- Donate: it is clean, safe and useful, but selling it would create more work than value.
- Dispose or recycle: it is broken, unsafe, expired or unsuitable for donation. Check local rules before leaving anything outside or at a charity shop.
Work in the right order
Begin six to twelve weeks ahead with low-emotion areas such as utility cupboards, garages and duplicate kitchenware. Leave photographs, letters and children's keepsakes until you have built some decision-making confidence. Book collections early because charity furniture collections and recycling-centre slots can fill up.
Be realistic about selling
Set a deadline. If an item has not sold by that date, reduce the price or donate it. The aim is not to squeeze the final pound from every object. It is to reach moving week with fewer decisions and fewer boxes.
When hands-on help is useful
A professional organiser can keep decisions moving, arrange practical categories and help the process feel less personal or overwhelming. See our pre-move decluttering service and current prices, or continue with our guide to packing for an easier unpack.
