Start eight weeks out, not moving week
Give yourself enough time for charity collections, recycling centre slots and anything you want to sell. Begin with the lowest emotion areas such as garages, utility cupboards, lofts and duplicate kitchenware, and leave photographs and family papers until last.
Room by room in a South Bucks family home
- Kitchen: use up open packets, throw away out of date food, and keep the equipment you actually cook with.
- Wardrobes: keep what fits the space in the new home, not the space you are leaving.
- Children's rooms: involve them in small decisions and keep the outgrown items moving out.
- Garage, loft and sheds: these hold the most items that get moved without ever being wanted.
- Paperwork: keep originals that matter legally or personally, and deal with the rest before it gets boxed.
Categorise as you go
We declutter with the new home in mind and categorise as we work, so what you keep travels across organised rather than mixed. That means the unpack at the other end is faster, because a box can be emptied in one place instead of sending you round the house.
Storage, from stock to bespoke
Once you know what is staying, storage can be planned properly. We use everything from stock storage products to bespoke planning for a specific cupboard, wardrobe or pantry, so the new home works on the day you move in rather than months later.
