Preparing to Move House: How to Prepare your Garage & Loft
How to prepare your garage and loft before you move house - our ultimate guide:
Our garages and lofts are often where we dump everything that we want to ‘deal with later’. They become chaotic, cluttered and disorganised and the longer we live in the house - the worse they become! When we think about moving house, the idea of sorting these areas out can be totally overwhelming.
When you are preparing to move, it’s useful to think of each and every item as a ‘job’ you have to do when you arrive at your new house. Each item will need to be unpacked, unwrapped and put in its ‘place’ so that you can settle in and live life without being surrounded by cardboard boxes forever. To reduce the number of items and therefore reduce your workload when you come to unpack, here is our step-by-step process for prepping these areas effectively:
- Book a skip or rubbish collection. Trust us - this speeds up your garage & loft sort out as we guarantee you’ll have lots of rubbish!
- Pull everything out. It’s unavoidable - you need to confront the chaos to make sense of it. As you pull items out, place them into categories such as car, tools, bike care, gardening etc.
- DECLUTTER - this is your chance to have the declutter of a lifetime. Have you used it in the last year? Do you need it to live your life? Could someone else benefit from this item more than you? Donate or recycle as much as you can. When thinking about selling items, be realistic about much bandwidth and time you have to do this. Is it worth the effort or would donating the item be faster and ultimately the least stressful route?
- Clear Boxes: Get some good quality, clear, lidded stackable boxes. Really Useful are the gold standard. Contain items in categories and label. Not only have you reduced the number of loose ‘items’ into boxes, but you will have created instant organised systems when these boxes are placed in your new home. No unpacking cardboard, everything will be clear and accessible immediately with no extra work required.
Once you have cracked these notoriously tricky zones in your home, you’ll feel so much calmer and more relaxed ahead of your move.
