How To Declutter And Organise Your Office Before You Move

March 9, 2025

Is your office drowning in paperwork, mystery manuals, and an avalanche of receipts from 2009? It’s time to take charge!  Keep essential documents safe, all while keeping your sanity intact.

Decluttering and organising it before you move will make packing easier and ensure you start fresh in your new home without unnecessary clutter.

We have created a step-by-step guide with 4 easy points to help you declutter and organise your Home Office efficiently before moving day.

1. The Great Paper Purge:

If your desk/life is chaos of paperwork, this is a great time to get the filing done one last time……

  • Create three piles—Keep, Shred, Recycle. Be ruthless! If you haven't needed it in a year, you probably never will.
  • Invest in a proper filing system, simple folders per person work well. Use labelled folders for bills, receipts, work projects, and anything tax-related.
  • Go Digital: Scan important documents and save them in neatly organised folders on your computer or cloud storage.

Bonus: You’ll never have to dig through a drawer for that "one important paper" again.

2. Document Drama:

What to Keep and Where to Keep It- this is the“must-keep” category and how to store them properly.

📌 Passports & Certificates: These are VIPs! Keep them in a fireproof cabinet if possible!

📌 Wills & Financial Info: Store these in a secure location—preferably a locked filing cabinet or a safety deposit box. Let a trusted family member know where they’re kept.

📌 Manuals: If you still have the instruction book for your flip phone from 2004, it’s time to let go. Keep only current manuals, or better yet, download the digital versions.

📌 Photos & Memorabilia: If your office is doubling as a scrapbook station, consider creating a designated storage box or scanning photos to preserve them digitally.

3. Taming the Miscellaneous Mayhem

Now that the papers are under control, what about the rest of the chaos?

🖊 Office Supplies Overload: No one needs 47 pens (especially ones that don’t work). Keep a few favourites and donate the rest.

📚 Books & Magazines: If your shelves are buckling under the weight of old industry magazines, it’s time for a refresh. Donate, recycle, or pass them on. Keep thinking of the space in your new house-will they be displayed or used again?

🎁 Random Knick-Knacks: We all love a little personality in our workspace, but too much clutter = distraction. Keep a few meaningful items and let the rest go-would this special box of memories be more suited to a different room in the new house?

4. The Golden Rule: Keep It Organised

Decluttering is great, but staying organised? That’s the real challenge. You need all of your hard work getting your paperwork in order to be ready to transfer to your new house.

✨ Create a System: Use colour-coded folders, labelled storage boxes, and designated spots for every item.

✨ Schedule a Monthly Purge: Set a reminder to do a quick office refresh every month.

✨ Adopt the "One In, One Out" Rule: If a new item enters your office, something else has to leave. This prevents clutter from creeping back in.

5. Leave the new owners a ‘House File’

Keep all paperwork relevant to the house in one box or large folder ready to leave for the new owners, this may include:

Labelled keys

Land registry info

Neighbours names info

House manuals/instructions

Interiors/products info

Relevant receipts/invoices/warranties
